Finance COW to discuss mayor's pay

Iqaluit's finance committee of the whole was to hold an open public meeting today at 1 p.m. on whether to convert the mayor's job to full-time status.

Currently, Mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik makes $40,000 for what is, on paper, a part-time job. But she and others have argued the job requires full-time hours for the mayor to be more effective.

Councillors will discuss a bylaw that would make the office full time, with a salary of $70,000 a year. That's roughly in line with mayor's salaries in the other northern capitals of Whitehorse and Yellowknife.

The matter has been before council on and off for months, with councillors voting 2-0 in November to send the bylaw, technically number 666, to committee. Three councillors were absent from that meeting and one abstained from the vote.
